My Bunny Rabbit Painting

I first got introduced to painting in art class in school like everyone else. However, I never thought I would pick it up again since paint is expensive and you have to have paint of each color and what not. Then, my sister gave me my first painting kit for Christmas one year. It was the Liquitex BASICS Acrylic Paint-It! Kit. It only had 6 colors (Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Raw Umber, Yellow Oxide, Deep Green Permanent) plus a big tube of titanium white. Unfortunately the umber had somehow dried into a weird blob (that was still wet but unable to mix or paint with) but this kit got me hooked!

The kit also came with a 5×7 canvas board which is very small by most people’s standards but it was perfect for me. I love painting small detailed items. However, I have completed bigger pieces. My latest was a 12×16 painting for a dear friend.

Bunny Pop up Card #2

20140411-153712.jpg

Here is another Bunny Pop Up card! I really love how unique this pop up card looks. Common pop up cards uses the V fold and stand mechanism. However, this card by Carol on extremecards uses this crossed X mechanism that looks amazing. I used her PDF card template and it worked extremely well! (lol pun not intended!) I didn’t want the printed lines to show so I traced over the printed template with pencil instead. Due to the folding design, it is hard to center the pop up portion perfectly on the card, but other wise this is a great pop up!

Wedding Rings Pop up Card

I made this wonderful wedding rings pop up card to congratulate two of my good friends. I noticed a card template by CreativePopUpCards a while ago and I always wanted to see if I could make it myself.  If you like the card template, please support his work by purchasing it on his website! I made this card from scratch as an intellectual challenge.

The card looks complicated but it was actually pretty straight forward after I took notes and made some test models. First, I made an exact outline for the placement of the rings on powerpoint (remember to set the page size). Next I made a outline for the message elements.

Card Outline

This is where I figured out what messages to write and pictures to add. The wedding theme was lavender and teal so I decided to have lavender on the inside. I added a Chinese theme to the card since the groom was Chinese (even though he is very American lol). I also had to choose fonts for all the word elements. On top of a outline template, I made a “print page” where I dumped all the words and pictures I needed to cut and paste into the card onto one page. No point in printing the whole outline and wasting space and color ink when it is not necessary.

So back to the rings: CreativePopUpCards has a solitaire engagement ring but my friend had a three stone setting with pavé diamonds on the side. The pavé diamonds wouldn’t show up on the side view so i just found a three stone setting with a pretty trellis for my template.

Lastly, it was just cutting the rings out and the message boxes and pasting all the printed words and pictures. Everyone really loved it!

What Da Font?

They are one of the best creations in computer history! If you love creating word art and graphic designs like me, fonts are indispensable in your artist toolbox. I get all my free and fun fonts from DaFont.com. On top of being free, installing a new font is easy-peasy too. All you have to do is download the font file from the website, unzip the individual files, and install into your computer. For detailed instructions, go to Dafont for help. The fonts are wonderfully designed and there are hundreds to choose from. If you have amazing design abilities, you should think about creating your own font.

I use fonts heavily to create unique cards for friends and family. But while fonts are amazing, it is very important to have a good program to design your word art. I personally don’t use anything fancy – just plain ole Microsoft Powerpoint. This gives you the ability to manipulate the placement of letters and add other graphics. On top of cardmaking, I also dabble in embroidery because I get so inspired by all the beautiful fonts.

Magic Cube Rose

This was one of my incredible finds on Youtube. It is a modular origami rose made with six pieces of paper (3 green and 3 red). I LOVE IT!
